New Delhi: The car blast incident that took place near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday has once again raised questions on the secondhand car market. Investigation has revealed that the vehicle in which the blast took place had been bought and sold several times. In such a situation, if you are also thinking of selling your old car, then it is very important to know some important legal precautions. A little carelessness can get you into trouble with some crime or challan.
1. Complete the documents; don't hand over the car just on trust
While selling the car, ensure that the entire process is completed on paper. Mere verbal agreement or online payment does not end the matter. It is necessary to fill out Form 29 and Form 30 of the RTO and get them signed by both parties. These documents are official proof of the transfer of ownership of the vehicle.
2. Confirm the real identity of the buyer
Always take a copy of the buyer's government identity card (like an Aadhaar card, PAN card, or driving license). Also, keep its address proof. This can become the basis of your safety during future police or RTO investigations.
3. Make a delivery receipt while handing over the car
Get a delivery receipt signed by the buyer at the time of handing over the vehicle and documents. Mention the date, time and complete list of documents in it. This will prove that you handed over the responsibility of the vehicle at a certain time.
4. Track the transfer process yourself in RTO
Many times the buyer does not get the vehicle transferred in his name. In such a situation, the challan or legal notice reaches the old owner. Therefore, after selling the car, keep checking whether the name transfer process has started or not. If there is a delay, inform the RTO in writing.
5. Notify the insurance company
Inform your insurance company immediately after the car is sold. They will cancel your policy and transfer the No Claim Bonus (NCB). Due to this, if the vehicle is involved in an accident in the future, you will not be held responsible.
Why is caution important?
According to RTO records, lakhs of second-hand cars are bought and sold every year in the country, but a large number of them remain incomplete in the transfer process. In such a situation, if the new owner misuses the vehicle, legal action can be taken against the old owner.
So remember—selling a car is not just a deal of handing over money and keys, but a transfer of legal responsibility. If this is not done with utmost care, you may have to bear the burden of someone else's mistake.
